Whats the scoop on fountain pens?

First I just wanted to thank you for your business. As we prepare for all of the end of the season shows please remember us for birthdays, graduation, promotions and just because. From the last shows we have noticed a trend toward our unique fountain pens and I wanted to take some time to let you know about some of the care and use guidelines to allow you to get the most out of your purchase. First of all, these pens are made to be used. I get comments that they are all works of art and will look great as a focal point on some ones desk. I have to agree with this but the main joy is in their use. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind.

Caring for a fountain pen involves a few important steps. Here are some instructions to help you maintain your fountain pen:

  1. Cleaning: Regularly clean your fountain pen to prevent ink buildup and maintain optimal performance. To clean the pen, disassemble it and rinse the nib, feed, and converter (or ink cartridge) with warm water until the water runs clear. Avoid using soap or harsh chemicals.
  1. Storage: Store your fountain pen in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep it in an upright position or horizontally if the pen is designed for that. Avoid exposing the pen to extreme temperatures or rapid temperature changes.

  2. Nib Care: Be careful not to drop or mishandle the pen's nib, as it is delicate. Avoid touching the nib with your fingers to prevent oil transfer. If you encounter any issues with the nib, it's best to consult a professional for adjustments or repairs.

Now, let's discuss inks and filling methods:

  1. Fountain Pen Inks: It's important to use inks specifically designed for fountain pens. Avoid using India ink, calligraphy ink, or any ink not specifically labeled for fountain pens, as they can clog the pen. There are various types of fountain pen inks available, including dye-based, pigment-based, and iron gall inks. Choose an ink that suits your preferences and the paper you typically write on.

  2. Filling Methods: There are different ways to fill a fountain pen, depending on the pen's design. Here are two common filling methods:

   - Cartridge: Many fountain pens use ink cartridges, which are pre-filled disposable containers. To fill, insert a cartridge into the pen's barrel and twist or push it until it clicks into place.

    - Converter: Some pens come with a converter, a reusable reservoir that allows you to fill the pen from a bottle of ink. To fill, attach the converter to the pen, immerse the nib into the ink bottle, and twist the converter mechanism to draw the ink up into the pen.

Certainly! Here are a few more tips on caring for your fountain pen:

  1. Avoid excessive pressure: When writing with a fountain pen, apply light and consistent pressure. Excessive pressure can damage the nib or cause ink flow issues. Let the pen's weight and gravity do the work for you.

  2. Use the pen regularly: Regular use helps prevent the ink from drying out inside the pen and keeps the components well-lubricated. If you won't be using the pen for an extended period, it's advisable to flush out the ink and clean the pen before storing it.

  3. Paper selection: Choose high-quality, fountain pen-friendly paper to enhance your writing experience and prevent feathering or bleed-through. Look for papers labeled as "fountain pen friendly" or "ink-resistant" for optimal results.

  4. Avoid lending your pen: It's best to refrain from lending your fountain pen to others, especially if they are not familiar with how to use it properly. Mishandling or applying excessive pressure can lead to damage.

By following these care tips, you can enjoy the longevity and optimal performance of your fountain pen.

As always we appreciate your business and hope this helps.
